A boat ride along the Ganges river is one of the absolute musts when visiting Varanasi. You have to negotiate the price a little bit because boats are in high demand and many tourists spoil the rates. Start upriver; this means you walk upstream as far as the University complex and negotiate a boat ride from there. Don’t mind any dead body floating by … this is nothing special in Varanasi, since lots of Hindus come here for their last days to die along the holy Ganges river. 2 - Must Do In Varanasi: The Area Around Malviya Bridge. 7 Things You Must Do When Visiting Varanasi, India. 1- Must Do In Varanasi: A Boat Ride Along The Ganges River. Now you’ve already seen the Varanasi skyline from a boat view, but to be near the action, a stroll along the Ganges downstream all the way to Malviya Bridge is a great experience. The bridge is a double decker bridge, that carries rail track on lower deck and road on the upper deck. It’s interesting to watch all the different vehicles & trains cross and see the people living underneath the bridge and its corners, where they are protected from sun and rain. Malviya Bridge is the “end” of the inner holy area of Varanasi. This means if one dies in this inner circle, he will reach eternity immediately and this is also the reason why lots of “homeless” people call this bridge their home. 3- Must Do In Varanasi: A stroll Along The Ghats. Every Ghat has its own meaning and use. Some Ghats are “reserved” for washing clothes and doing laundry. For example Assi Ghat is a prominent bathing Ghat, while others are dedicated to worshipping, and some are for cremation like Manikarnika Ghat, downstream from the Dasaswameth (main) Ghat. Bathing near Tulsi Ghat is believed to get rid of leprosy. So as you can see, there’s not only lots to see, but also lots to learn about each Ghat along the Ganges river. 4- Must Do In Varanasi: Varanasi From Above. There are many hotels with roof terraces – either with a restaurant, or a private balcony adjoining the room. We suggest to have lunch at one of these places to see Varanasi from above. Good places are: Alka Hotel, Ganpati guest house and Temple Hotel – especially for views of the (burning) ghats. Alka hotel and Ganpati guest house are good options for your entire stay in Varanasi. 5- Must Do In Varanasi: Exploring The Winding Side Streets. The old town is dotted with small alleys, so just leave the main road, turn left or right and you will come to see some unusual places. Don’t worry about getting lost, because sooner or later you’ll end up either in front of the river or on a main street. A compass is a good choice not to lose direction. 6- Must Do In Varanasi: Experiencing Varanasi During A Festival. Hundreds, or better thousands of people all dressed in orange hurdled in every little street corner during festivals in Varanasi. The police forces are relentless, worshippers have to line up and obey all the rules that are enforced on such festival occasions. Police will not hesitate to use their bamboo sticks to keep things in order. It’s a security measurement to keep such big hordes under control. Try to get somewhere on top so that you can watch the crowds from above. 7- Must Do In Varanasi: Getting A Haircut of bears Trim At A Local Barber. If you’re travelling through India, you’ll notice that the hairdressers you’ll pass along the streets are barbers for men only. Lady hairdressers are mostly hidden behind closed doors or curtains. If you insist enough though, even a local barber will give you a nice wash and blow dry … and if you’re really lucky (and you’re up for it) even a haircut. Don’t worry, hair grows again… after all, no risk, no fun. Plus it’s quite relaxing when you’re out all day in a crowded city like Varanasi.

Ganga Aarti Ceremony in Varanasi 2017, India 4k - Varanasi India Culture Varanasi, India Google Map https://goo.gl/35VdTZ Although there are over 700 temples in Varanasi, none are more sacred than the Ganges river itself. The Ganges is worshipped as a living goddess, with the power to cleanse all earthly sins. Daily baths in her waters are advised by Hindu scriptures to prepare for the soul’s final journey to liberation. Offerings of flowers and diyas floating down the river are a common and very pretty sight. To offer salutations to the Ganges River, a special ceremony is held daily at dusk known as “Ganga Aarti”. An aarti is a Hindu devotional ritual performed to gods and goddesses that uses fire as an offering. In this case, the offering is made to the Goddess Ganga, also affectionately referred to as Ma Ganga, the goddess of the most holy river in India. The most common offering is usually in the form of a lighted lamp; in the case of the Ganges River, the aarti consists of a small diya made up of a candle surrounded by flowers that is floated down the river. Ganga Aarti takes place every evening on the banks of the Ganges River in Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi. However, the ceremony is very different at each of these places. Ganga Aarti Varanasi Timing ======================= The Varanasi Ganga Aarti takes place every sunset (7pm in summer, 6pm in winter) at holy Dasaswamedh Ghat, near Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It differs from the aartis at Haridwar and Rishikesh in that it’s a highly choreographed ceremony. Although a spectacular must-see, some people consider it to be too much of an artificial and showy extravaganza to have a lot of meaning in a spiritual context. The aarti is performed on an elevated stage facing the river by a group of young pandits (Hindu priests), draped in saffron-colored robes with their puja plates spread out before them. The ceremony commences with the blowing of a conch shell, and continues with the waving of incense sticks in elaborate patterns and circling of large flaming lamps that create a bright hue against the darkened sky. The movement of the lamps, held in the pandits’ hands, is tightly synchronized to the rhythmic chants of hymns and clangs of cymbals. The lamps are lit and circled around by the pandits (Hindu priests) in a clockwise manner, accompanied by chanting or songs in praise of Mother Ganga. The idea is that the lamps acquire the power of the deity. The heady scent of sandalwood thickly permeates the air. After the ritual is complete, devotees will cup their hands over the flame and raise their palms to their forehead in order to get the Goddess’s purification and blessing. A “Maha Aarti” (Great Aarti) takes place on a particularly elaborate scale in Varanasi near the end of each year on the day of Kartik Purnima. Special aartis are also held on Tuesdays and on religious festivals. Tips for Attending the Varanasi Ganga Aarti Ceremony ======================================= It is advisable to get to Dasaswamedh Ghat early in order to get a good viewing spot close to the ceremony area. People usually start arriving very early (as early as 5pm) to secure their spots in advance. There are several vantage points from where you can get a good view. A novel and effective way of seeing it is by boat from the river; you have to take a sunset boat trip or pay for the privilege of sitting in the boat. Alternatively, many shops in the vicinity hire their balconies out to tourists. Also, a VIP area is usually set up in front of the ghat which offers great views. For free viewing spots, head to the blocks of concrete directly in front of the stage. For the price of standing during the ceremony, you get one of the best views of the aarti performance. Alternatively, you can sit at the back of the stage and assist with ringing one of the bells during the ceremony.
